I’m currently working on a client site where they use WebSense to filter the internet. KL and I have tried various means around this filtering, but we haven’t figured anything out yet. I hated WebSense when I first encountered it, and while I still don’t like that it is implemented here, I now respect it as a product and a company. Here is my story:

I’d never had trouble accessing bicman.org website from this client site until this week. I tried to come here, and I was given a page saying that our favorite, crappy weblog is a “Sex” site and could not be accessed. On Monday, I was annoyed, but I brushed it aside as just something I’d have to accept. By Tuesday afternoon, my job had frustrated me to such a point where I wanted to be able to control SOMETHING. I looked up WebSense on the interweb, and I sent them an e-mail saying that bicman.org wasn’t a sex site, and I didn’t feel it should be filtered.

Less than THREE HOURS later, I had a response, and not an auto-generated computer response. Someone had already looked at the site, and recategorized it. This site is virtually hosted, so it shared an IP with a sex site. So then, I gave it a day for databases to propagate and such, and now, still being on the client site, I’m accessing bm.o. My job sucks hardcore today, but at least I have one small success to get me through the day.

I’m back in the office today after 5 days off. On Friday, I closed on my new house. The rest of the time has been packing and moving. The bulk of the move was done on Monday, and now we’re still trying to get all of the stragglers. It seems we have a lot of stuff.

I’ll be stopping by our apartment and storage unit to pick up a load of stuff tonight, but when I get home, I think I’m going to try to at least partially set up my office. The house is going to be the number one priority right now, but I’m going to try to save a little bit of energy to try and do a few things for this job search.

So, restarting my blog the exact way it was somehow merited a 2.0, yet a complete reboot on a different software and a different webhost only gets 2.01. Well, that’s because this is what 2.0 should’ve been, and we’re certainly not to 3.0 yet.

Why am I posting again? I have a lot of internal turmoil, and I hope this can help to resolve some of that. I’m about to start a full-scale job search, and posting about it might help me to keep my spirits up, as well as give me some sort of accountability. I posted a question to reddit on how to increase my marketability, and one answer stuck out. The poster mentioned a strategy where you assume 50 resume submissions for every interview and 4 interviews before you get an offer. With that, you create a 200 square grid and a 4 square grid, and check off the boxes when you submit resumes and get interviews respectively. I think I might do this, and I think I might do this electronically on this blog.

On a side note, I close on my house tomorrow, and I am super excited, and super-stressed. The stress is mainly the fear of the unknown since I’ve never owned a house before, and there’s so much to do, and so little money to do it. But, I’m certain that the excitement will overwhelm the stress once I can play in my new house around noon tomorrow. (I’m taking the day off.)

So, for those of you who like WordPress better than MT, thank Daniel since he pointed me to Dreamhost, and they made this installation so incredibly easy. Now that I’ve posted this, hopefully I can feel like this is off of my mind for today because I really need to get some more work done before I leave today. The fact that I am slowly beginning to hate my job has made it very difficult to concentrate.
